The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church addresses Students of Elmina Methodist JHS

As you prepare for your BECE and those who will be continuing, have the strength and wisdom of God to continue with your academic work.

I have heard that this is one of our best schools in the whole country, and the number of students who move from here to top schools as without default, and it shows that the students, the teachers, the parents, and all stakeholders, take a keen interest in academic work.

And for you to also play your part, this is why I have decided this morning to have a word with you and to pray with you.

I don’t normally do this, so you are so fortunate and so blessed this morning, and I want you to appreciate your head teacher, all the teachers and everyone who are part of our formation.

My word of advice to you is that, with the Methodist in Education, we have our pillars.
Our pillars are:
-Morality
-Service
-Integrity
-and Excellence
This are four key place in which we stand.

And if our students, our teachers and all stakeholders in our Educational sector rely on this, then success and blessings will be our portion all the time,
so I will leave that with you.
I know you already know that, but I will leave it with you and hammer it that,
we students of Elmina Methodist JHS excel everywhere we go.

Rev. Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo ended his speech by praying for the students teachers and the church.

HISTORY OF ELMINA METHODIST SCHOOL

School Crest

Founded in 1889, it was located at the present day, Akotobinsin Methodist Primary School. In 1950, it was moved to its current present site at Abenasarmu when a four – classroom block was completed.

In the 1970s, it was turned into a continuation school where the following vocation was taught alongside the normal academic subjects.

Pottery, Fishing, Tailoring and Home Science. Fishing and Home Science were taught outside the school (Fishing classes were held at the Fisheries Department Block near the castle by personnel from the G.E.S as well as Home Science in the G.E.S Home Science block at the D/C school premises. )

With time the (Continuation) Vocational aspect was phased out due to the scarcity of vocation teachers.

In September 1980, when the enrollment increased considerably with pupils from the two feeding primary schools – Akotobinsin Methodist Primary and Etsiapa Methodist Primary, the need was felt to (Start) open an additional class for middle Form one (1) and this gave birth to the ‘B’ stream. The initial problem was with accommodation.

The then Local Manager of Methodist Schools, in consultation with the Regional Manager of Methodist Schools (Central) and the District Education Directorate at Cape Coast, an agreement was made to use one of the classrooms at the Akotobinsin Primary School, to start the Form one B.

This arrangement bred Primary 5 and 6 to use classroom on shift basis. Mr. John Baidoo was posted to the new school .Early in 1981,

Mr. Badioo vacated post and this compelled the authorities’ to transfer Mr. M.K. Gyesi-Mensah from the main Middle School to take charge of the new school, which had then got to the second year.

The two forms shared the same classroom on shift basis. After a few months of staying in the school, Mr. Gyasi – Mensah proposed moving the school from Akotobinsin to Abenasarmu and operating the shift system with the first two forms at the existing Middle School under Mr. R.E. Nkrumah was approved by the authorities.

In April, 1981, Mr. Gyasi – Mensah was once again transferred to the Akotobinsin Primary School to be the substantive Headteacher whilst Mr. R.E. Nkrumah was made a detached headteacher of the two Methodist Middle Schools (A & B) accordingly.

In September, 1984, Mr. M.K. Gyasi-Mensah replaced Mr. Robert Enoch Nkrumah as the detached headteacher of Elmina Methodist A&B Middle schools.

The introduction of the Junior Secondary School concept in September, 1987 called for the split of the two (2) schools which were under one head into two separate schools, placed under different heads. Mr. M.K. Gyasi-Mensah maintained his headship of the ‘A’ stream whilst the ‘B’ stream was placed under Mr. Thomas Rudolf Amoh.

After ten years and as a result of the Rationalization exercise pursued by the Ghana Education Service in September, 1997, the two heads were transferred and replaced by Mr. E.H. Koufie and Mr. J.W. Aikins –Mensah for the ‘A’ & ‘B’ streams respectively. The enrollment explosion in the two schools called for the provision of extra classrooms to accommodate the expected graduates from the main feeding Primary School (Akotobinsin & Etsiapa) and others. Consequently, eight additional classrooms and offices were provided by the Assembly and commissioned.
